GUND is known worldwide for its top quality, soft and huggable plush designs that appeal to all ages, from infants up, and are perfect for both play and collecting. The 106 year old company is based in Edison, New Jersey. The leading soft toy manufacturer in the U.S., and also the oldest, GUND was founded by German immigrant Adolph Gund in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1898. GUND was one of the first companies to design and produce teddy bears in the early 1900’s following the lead of Ideal and Steiff.
When the founder retired, without any children, he sold the firm to an employee. The only stipulation was that the name remain the same. That family is still deeply involved in the day to day operation of GUND. Early on they introduced the concept of industry licensing with well-known cartoon characters such as Felixtm the Cat, Mickey Mousetm, Donald Ducktm, Popeyetm and others. In the early 70's the company began using its now trademarked under-stuffing technique, the heart of what became "the world’s most huggable plush".
The famous GOTTA GETTA GUND advertising campaign in the early 1980’s solidified the company’s recognition as a leading consumer brand. Today, the company manufactures an extensive collection of unique characters and licensed plush under the GUND and babyGUND brands. Although known primarily for sewn plush, they have also released unique jointed collectible bears.
